Growing in God and the Craft of Writing

I’ve been writing and publishing for over twenty-five years. Of course, I began as a child. 😊 What I’ve learned is growing in my relationship with God helps me grow in the craft of writing. God is the Coach, and I’m the writer seeking wisdom. The more we purposely strengthen our relationship with the great Creator, the more our purposely driven craft develops.

John 15:16 ESV teaches us: You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

A serious writer continuously learns about the craft to succeed in reaching others. Christian writers understand growing in God partners with growing in their craft. Communication through the written word is an art, a blessing, and a sacred gift. God purposed us as scribes, and we have a responsibility to seek knowledge of the art and Him.

Dear writer, don’t fall for the misconception that if God has purposed you to write, He’ll drop ship the knowledge into your mind, position your work on the bestseller list, and send your social media posts viral. If we were gifted with music, dance, or painting, wouldn’t we need to learn and practice?

As writers, we understand our purpose and calling. We value the diligence and commitment required to take our writing to the next level. The following seven tips help accomplish what God intended for His writers before we were knitted in our mothers’ wombs.

  1. Spend time with God daily before our fingers touch the keyboard. Pray for insight into our personal and professional lives.
  2. Establish time every day to deepen our writing skills, increase in social savvy media, and learn what is happening in the publishing world.
  3. Respond to those who comment on social media platforms in a gracious and helpful manner. Social media is not about us.
  4. Read best sellers to determine why those books have appeal.
  5. Help serious writers by pointing them in the right direction.
  6. Get involved in a writer’s group either online or face-to-face.
  7. Know what is going on in the world. We can’t address the needs of hurting people if we don’t know what is happening.
