Why Audiobooks?© 2025 Karen Busler
Have you ever considered having your literary masterpiece performed into an audiobook? I say “performed” because it’s not just reading words out loud. That’s what AI voices do, and that’s okay, but it’s not the best way to present your work in its best light to your devotees. In addition to your fictional hero, you have many other characters with their own different voices contributing to your hero’s journey. A voice artist can bring your story to life in an engaging way, with pacing, timing, accents, changes in emotion, all the things that make your story human and relatable to the listener. AI simply cannot do that, but an experienced voice artist certainly can!
For voice artists and their producers, working with authors to get just the right “feel” for a scene or a character or situation, is a most pleasurable challenge. As an author, bringing your opus to life is intensely satisfying, as if you’re presenting your tale as a play. And, it opens up a whole new audience for your books, too.
Let’s say you have a New York cop, an Eastern European Rabbi, and children as well as various adults in your story. One versatile artist voicing it all can perform all these characters and accents. Hearing the different voices keeps the story moving forward and is intensely interesting to the listener. They know who’s speaking simply from the accents or pitches so there’s no confusion. It’s as if the listener is right there in the story – and isn’t that what you’re trying to do – engage the reader/listener to where they’re invested in your tale? An audiobook is uniquely qualified to do just that!
With all this in mind, I hope you’ll explore turning your fictional story with multiple characters into a vocal play by hiring a pro to make it an exciting experience for everyone!
If you write non-fiction, you may want to voice your words yourself, since you’re the obvious expert about what you’ve written. But if you don’t particularly like your own voice or don’t feel capable of doing this, having someone else voice it for you is always a viable option.
