Is your self-talk killing your confidence? Does your inner critic lie about your worth and steal your joy?
Before a recent speaking engagement, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror talking to myself. “How can my words help teenagers? This is a huge responsibility, Robin. Who do you think you are?”
Have you ever felt the weight of questions like these? If so, let’s see how to change your thoughts and your self-talk.
Why are my words important?
Because no one else can say it like you. Your God-given creativity and unique life experiences give you a valuable perspective. And what’s familiar or seems unimportant to you is fresh insight for your audience. Don’t rob them of their aha! moment.
But look at them! I’m so not there.
Comparison crushes your confidence. God didn’t create you to write like them, look like them, speak like them, or even market like them. That would be boring. We are made to be companions, not competitors. I used to feel inferior to others because I don’t have a college degree. Then a well-known author told me, “Our credentials come from God.”
But look at me! I’m struggling.
Not feeling the shiniest lately? I am right there with you. This is our human experience and we’re all just learning as we go. Give yourself grace and be real with your fellow humans. They will connect with you, and your words will inspire them. Author Sara Turnquist says, “The presence of shadows doesn’t disqualify the light you are to the world.”
That day I looked in the mirror and asked myself those questions, my new self-talk surprised me. And I didn’t hesitate.
“I am God’s daughter. He equips me. And I can’t believe I get to do this.”
It’s an honor and joy to write and speak words of hope and healing. When the work and responsibility try to steal your joy and crush your confidence, I pray you remember: You are God’s child. You have all you need to hush the words that make you doubt your worth.
And, you get to do this.
